MUMBAI: Consumer activist and social worker M.R. Pai died on Thursday morning after a brief illness. He was 72.
One of the leading lights of the consumer movement, Mr Pai was known for his relentless battles, especially on behalf of telephone subscribers and bank depositors.
He shot into prominence in the late ‘70s when his work with the Forum of Free Enterprise, along with the late jurist Nani Palkhivala, helped build the organisation’s reputation nationwide.

He was also on several government committees and much sought-after by companies and organisations to resolve disputes and advise on issues. “He was a role model for us,’’ said activist Shirish Deshpande, who recalled Mr Pai as a reticent, but meticulous and honest person.
