MUMBAI: A 37-year-old teacher died after she was clobbered on the head with a hammer by an estate agent outside her building in Bhandup around 11.30am on Monday. Later in the day, the man jumped to his death from the terrace of his building, also in Bhandup, around 8pm.
The woman, Yashmita Milind Salunke, was known to Kishore Sawant (40), the police said.
Yashmita has adult children and so does Kishore. The police said they will record statements of the families of both victims to determine what could have spurred the attack.
Around 11.30am, Yashmita had stepped out of her building when Kishore lunged towards her and attacked her with the hammer.
Killer pushed away guard who tried to interveneThe
murder and suicide have left locals in the neighbourhood, especially eyewitnesses, in shock.
The building’s security guard, Deepak Ambekar, said that the “hefty” man had been waiting for her. No sooner did she emerge than he attacked her, the guard said.
Deputy commissioner of police Akhileshkumar Singh said that the attacker was possibly acquainted with the woman. “The woman was attacked in the parking space of the building. The security guard who witnessed it tried to intervene, but the attacker pushed the guard away,” Singh said. “The guard says he tried to nab the man, but he managed to slip out.”
Senior inspector of Bhandup police station, Shyam Shinde, said that Yashmita was taken to Mulund general hospital where she died within a few hours due to internal injuries sustained on the skull. No suicide note has been found, he said.
