‘Slaughter facilities available in 1km’, Goregaon society’s permission for goat sacrifice revoked
Mumbai: BMC’s P-South ward office has revoked the permission granted for goat sacrifice on the premises of a Goregaon housing society, citing the availability of an authorised slaughterhouse within a radius of 1km.
The building in Satellite Garden Phase 2 at Gokuldham, Goregaon East, had been given permission on May 25.
The ward office cited a letter issued by the assistant commissioner (market) on May 20, which reached it on May 26, along with a list of 15 authorised locations for religious animal slaughter. The letter also referred to a licensed mutton shop on Khadakpada Film City Road in Malad East, 1km from the housing society. It said the shop’s licence had been renewed till March 31 next year and advised residents to use the facility for Bakr Eid sacrifices.
The cancellation letter was addressed to the chairman and the secretary of the housing society.
BJP corporator Priti Satam had written to the ward’s assistant commissioner demanding that there be no slaughter within the housing society. She pointed out that, as per the civic body’s policy, factors such as hygiene, public health, traffic management and the sensitivity of areas surrounding schools, hospitals and religious places must be taken into consideration while permitting animal slaughter. She said last year, too, following complaints from citizens, the administration had revoked permissions.
Dindoshi police personnel were deployed at the housing society on Wednesday. A senior police official said BMC cancelled the permission later in the day. “This was acceptable to residents. There was no untoward incident.”
BJP functionary Kirit Somaiya claimed that an application seeking nod for slaughter at a Ghatkopar housing society was rejected and all goats on the premises removed.
Meanwhile, after BMC additional commissioner Ashwini Joshi received an anonymous complaint that 45 goats had been kept illegally at a building in Sewri, a joint inspection with police was conducted and the goats were seized and sent to the Deonar abattoir. Unauthorised temporary sheds were also demolished.
