Two labourers die after falling off under-construction buildings in Mumbai, contractors booked for negligence
Mumbai: A 29-year-old man fell to his death from the 18th floor of an under-construction building at Goregaon West recently. Police registered an FIR against the contractor and developer for putting him up on the 18th floor without any precautionary measures for his safety. In another incident, a 32-year-old labourer died after he fell from the fifth floor of an under-construction building to its fourth floor in Mazgaon.
In the Goregaon case, the deceased was identified as Saumya Behra, 29. Police said Behra was a native of Odisha. He fell from the 18th floor of an under-construction building at SV Road early on May 6. He was rushed to Trauma Care Hospital at Jogeshwari, where doctors pronounced him dead. Police then recorded his roommate’s statement and examined the 18th floor. The balcony did not have any safety wall or window railings. Police then registered an FIR against the contractor, Jitendra Das, and the developer.
In another case, a 32-year-old labourer working at an under-construction building in Mazgaon died on Saturday, and another labourer was injured after they fell from the fifth floor to the fourth floor. The supervisor and construction manager have been booked in the case for negligence causing death. The incident took place on Saturday evening.
The complainant, Habib Shah, 21, a labourer who originally belongs to West Bengal, told police that he and his colleague, Pranab Luthu Mal, 32, were working on the fifth floor of a building in Mazgaon when the two slipped and fell on the fourth floor. While they were wearing helmets, they were not given other safety measures like safety belts, the complainant told police. The complainant also sustained injuries, and the two were taken to JJ Hospital. The doctors declared Mal dead. The police booked supervisor Zubair Malpekar, 38, and construction manager Farooque Thim for allegedly not providing safety belts to the labourers. Further probe is on.
