Woman pedestrian killed in hit-and-run in Navi Mumbai
Navi Mumbai: An unidentified woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident while allegedly attempting to cross the Sion-Panvel Highway near Belpada in Kharghar on Saturday morning.
The Kharghar police have registered an FIR against an unidentified vehicle driver under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act for rash and negligent driving causing death.
Police said the woman, aged around 30 years old, was found critically injured on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the highway between the Kharghar skywalk and Belpada Metro Junction at around 9.45 am. A passing motorist alerted the police after spotting her lying injured on the road.
Senior Inspector Sanjay Joshi of Kharghar police station said officers rushed to the spot and shifted the woman to Panvel Sub-District Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police said no identity documents were found on the deceased. Based on her attire, investigators suspect she may have been homeless.
“Road median railings have been installed near the Kharghar skywalk to prevent jaywalking and encourage pedestrians to use the skywalk. However, the woman may have walked towards Belpada, where there is no median railing, and was struck while attempting to cross the highway,” Joshi said.
Police are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed near the Kharghar skywalk and along the road towards CBD-Belapur to identify the vehicle involved in the accident.
