The police have also arrested Nivedekar's four accomplices who had helped him in committing the fraud. "Nivedekar had used the bank account of his accomplices-Vilas Gamre (22), Rajesh Chavan (40), Amil Madankar (39) and Sanjay Gurav-to deposit the cheques and paid them commission,'' an official said. Nivedekar was nabbed from Ratnagiri, while his accomplices were nabbed from different places in the western suburbs.
During interrogation, Nivedekar said that he was employed with the shop for the last four years. "My employer assigned me to carry out bank transactions and I managed to steal 100 cheques in 2007. I along with my four accomplices managed to withdraw Rs 4.66 lakh between 2007 and 2008,'' Nivedekar revealed during interrogation.
On August 7, when the accused deposited a cheque of Rs 22 lakh with Cosmos bank in Dadar, the bank manager called Maru and inquired. "Maru instructed the bank to stop payment. He then called us up and told us about the fraud. He also informed us about the withdrawals from his Delhi accounts,'' Shivaji Park assistant inspector Sunil Kale said.
