Madikeri: The historic Bodu Namme festival was held in South Kodagu, bringing to life colourful portrayals of sages, demons, mythical characters and wildlife. The celebration culminated with special prayers and offerings to village deities. The tribal community members from across Kodagu observe Bodu Namme, which showcases their indigenous traditions. Participants don various costumes, including female attire, demon masks and sage robes, whilst performing rituals for village deities and community welfare. The festival has grown more elaborate each passing year, with devotees creating innovative costumes that combine religious devotion with entertainment for onlookers."The Bodu Namme is celebrated across the district during April and May. It is celebrated with unique rituals with minor differences in each village," said a local resident Karun Kalaiah. Deer and tiger costumes, and other animal costumes form the basis of the festivities in North Kodagu, he said. "However, cross-dressing and dancing in other eccentric costumes form the basis of the festivities in South Kodagu villages," he added.Whilst villages such as Kuttanad, Kuttandi, B Shettigeri and Cheeniwada have concluded their celebrations, other locations including Bondat Bod, Nagala Bod, and Halligat Bod are preparing for upcoming festivities next month. The frequency of celebrations varies amongst villages, with some hosting annual events whilst others observe the festival every two or three years.
