Nagpur: The Nagpur police arrested four accused, including a minor and a history-sheeter, in connection with a major burglary at a jewellery and steel shop, where valuables worth over Rs42 lakh were stolen.
The burglary took place between 4.30-6 am on May 8 at IC Chowk in Gedam Layout. According to police, unidentified burglars broke open the shutter locks of the shop and fled with gold ornaments, silver articles and cash.
The case came to light after residents alerted police about suspicious activity at the establishment. Based on a complaint lodged by shop owner Manoj Shah (56), MIDC police launched an intensive investigation.
Commissioner of police Ravinder Singal told reporters on Tuesday that the accused stole approximately 310 grams of gold ornaments, 1.7kg of silver ornaments and nearly Rs5 lakh cash from the premises. Teams from Zone 1 police, MIDC police station and the Crime Branch's Anti-Extortion Squad immediately initiated parallel investigations using technical analysis and confidential inputs.
Within 48 hours of the burglary, police tracked and arrested the accused, Mustafa Khan(18), a resident of Kamptee, Sumit Suman (18) of WCL Colony, and one minor.
Another accused, identified as Sagar alias Liga Waghade of Wadi, who is reportedly a history-sheeter, was also arrested during the operation.
During interrogation, investigators learned that the accused had divided the stolen property into four portions at Kamptee after the burglary. Police said one accused attempted to flee towards Ujjain, another towards Bhopal, while the remaining two moved towards Amravati before all were traced and taken into custody.
Police recovered around 310 grams of gold ornaments, 1.7kg silver articles, Rs49,000 cash, one mobile phone and a motorcycle allegedly used in the crime. The total seized property is estimated to be worth around Rs28.51 lakh.
