BJP cadre pushes aggressive electoral strategy in Vidarbha ahead of council elections
Nagpur: As the seat-sharing deadlock within Mahayuti continues, BJP functionaries in Vidarbha have begun pushing for an aggressive electoral strategy ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. The district-level functionaries have conveyed a clear message to party leadership in Nagpur that BJP should not be caught off guard by last-minute seat-sharing demands from alliance partners.Party insiders told TOI that leaders across Vidarbha are pressing the BJP to contest from a position of strength in constituencies where it enjoys numerical advantage through local bodies and organisational presence. The concern within sections of BJP is that Shiv Sena, led by deputy CM Eknath Shinde, is attempting to expand its footprint in Vidarbha and may try to bargain for seats here in council polls, particularly in constituencies where BJP traditionally dominated local authority politics.Senior BJP functionaries said the party's strength in municipal corporations, zilla parishads and local bodies gives it a clear advantage in most Vidarbha constituencies. However, they admitted there is nervousness about friendly competition within the ruling alliance. A BJP functionary from Vidarbha said local units do not want a repeat of situations where prolonged negotiations weaken cadre morale. "The feeling in the organisation is that Vidarbha is BJP's strongest region, and the party should approach these elections with confidence instead of defensive calculations," the leader said. The immediate focus is on the Nagpur Local Authorities' Constituency bypoll, necessitated after revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule vacated the MLC seat following his election to the Legislative Assembly in 2024. The seat term runs only until January 1, 2028, and the shorter tenure has triggered internal discussions over candidate selection and future political positioning.Apart from Nagpur, biennial elections will also be held for Bhandara-cum-Gondia, Wardha-cum-Chandrapur-cum-Gadchiroli, Yavatmal and Amravati constituencies in Vidarbha. Party leaders believe these polls will serve as an indicator of political influence at the grassroots level ahead of the next round of local body elections.Polling is scheduled for June 18 and counting for June 22. Nominations close on June 1 and the last date for withdrawal is June 4. BJP said consultations with district units are already underway, and the party is expected to finalise names after internal feedback from the region.
