Nagpur: The Amravati police and their Nagpur counterparts made significant cash seizures amounting to over 3.90 crore on Wednesday.
While Amravati police seized around 2.40 crore in three separate actions, Nagpur police seized over 1 .5 crore from an individual.
Speaking to TOI, Amravati CP Navinchandra Reddy said, "Three seizures, including one of 2 crore, 35 lakh, and 4.5 lakh, were made on Wednesday at different locations."
He also claimed that the 2 crore seizure is being claimed to belong to a bank. "The people carrying the cash told us that it belongs to the bank, but we are verifying it. We have referred the income tax department as well," said Reddy.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Nagpur Tehsil police, under the guidance of zonal DCP Mahak Swamy, seized over 1.5 crore from a man near Nangaputla Chowk in Central Avenue. Cops were carrying out checks as part of the drive for the upcoming election when they spotted a suspicious person carrying a bag on a moped. Cops stopped him, checked the bag, and found the cash.
The detained person is identified as Shakir Khan Haji Nasir Khan (42), a resident of Yashodhara Nagar. Till late night, police were in the process of counting the cash and were also verifying if the cash was going to be used for distribution in the election or if it was hawala money. TNN
