NU special summer exam for final year students eyeing PG course in natl insts
Nagpur: For the first time, Nagpur University (NU) is conducting special examinations in summer for final-year students seeking admission to postgraduate programmes at national-level institutes. Special examinations for athletes are common after winter examinations.NU has asked all such final-year students to immediately route their applications through their college principal to the director, students welfare department. NU is planning to complete the process in the next 25 days and announce results before July 5 to ensure students do not miss admission deadlines. In May, the university allowed students to skip university examinations if they clashed with entrance tests and admission-related examinations conducted by national institutes and universities, including IIT, CUET and other entrance processes. Later, it was brought to the notice of the university that despite appearing for their examinations, students might not receive results in time to participate in the upcoming admission rounds beginning across the country. In fact, some institutes have already started their registration portals for admissions. Senate member Manmohan Bajpai said he met vice-chancellor Manali Kshirsagar on Saturday, drawing her attention to the issue, and got an assurance that special examinations would be held soon. "The VC has instructed the exam section to immediately plan the special exam and target publication of results by July 5. Many admission rounds for professional courses like MTech, MBA have begun in other cities. Final-year students from NU will need a marksheet to take part in this admission rounds," he said.NU officials said exam section would be issuing a notification to call applications from all such affected students. "So far, 40 students have applied for a special exam. We believe many more were affected, but they have not approached us so far. We are encouraging students to apply in large numbers. Once we have sufficient numbers, we will announce exams in eight days' time and release the results in another eight days. This is the first time the university is taking such a step in summer exam. Normally, such exams are held for sportspersons as they have to compete in tournaments, but that is done after winter exam," exam officials said. The results of some final-year courses have been published, including those of affected students. Hence, many have been marked absent and got a ‘fail' result. But once these students apply for a special exam, officials said their results would be updated. Bajpai earlier urged the NU administration to prepare the examination schedule for the academic session 2026-27 in a manner that prevents overlap with major competitive and entrance examinations such as UPSC, MPSC, IIT entrance tests, and other professional course admissions. He said that the university should ensure that the new academic session begins on time while safeguarding the academic interests of students from Vidarbha. He stated that students should not suffer any loss or adverse impact on their future due to examination scheduling conflicts. Bajpai also expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with the university administration and assist in finding a practical solution to the issue. He appealed to the VC to take an immediate and appropriate decision in the larger interest of students.
