NAGPUR: Unidentified thieves pulled off a stunning theft when they decamped with Rs 20 lakh cash from a car parked in front of a bank at Gandhibagh during rush hour on Monday. Shakila Begum and her son Sohail had gone inside the bank when the cash, withdrawn around half-an-hour ago and kept on the floor of their car between front and rear seats, was stolen.
Police said Shakila had withdrawn the cash from a private locker at Telephone Exchange square on Central Avenue. She had her son Sohail with her. The closed circuit television footage showed Shakila, who had driven down to the private locker, had left her son Sohail in the car before going inside and bringing the amount. While heading towards Gandhibagh, Sohail drove the car while Shakila sat in the rear seat with the bag containing money.
It is learnt that Shakila and Sohail both went inside the bank at Gandhibagh after leaving the car parked on the road with the cash in it unguarded. Police said the window of the vehicle was rolled down only partially through which the thieves may have slid their hand inside to open the door lock or somehow pulled the bag with the cash from the car.
Shakila's husband Aslam Sheikh had sold a property on Central Avenue from which he had got the cash which has now been stolen. He was keen to purchase another property and so had sent his wife and son to bring the money from the locker. Tehsil police have registered the offence as theft. Around four teams have been formed to probe the case.
