Sonegaon’s 300-year-old Bhonsle era well set to get its old glory back
Nagpur: Acting on multiple reports highlighting the deteriorating condition of a 300-year-old well from the Bhonsle era, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare on Sunday conducted an inspection of the historic structure located in Sonegaon's Amrai forest area. TOI had, on multiple fronts, reported on how the centuries-old structure was languishing in neglect.Accompanied by NMC's Laxmi Nagar zonal assistant commissioner Dhananjay Jadhav, corporators Amol Shyamkule and Ishwar Dhengale and fire chief Barapatre, Dani-Wakhare assessed the extent of structural damage and neglect that has plagued the well for years. Officials examined safety risks, including partially collapsed walls, while also reviewing immediate steps to prevent further deterioration.Believed to have been constructed during the reign of Raghujiraje Bhonsle I around three centuries ago, the well was once an integral part of a well-planned water management system. Today, however, it lies in a dilapidated state, filled with garbage, plastic waste, algae, and discarded liquor bottles, eroding both its historical identity and environmental value. The site holds cultural significance due to the presence of an ancient Krishna temple in the vicinity, set amidst a green landscape that continues to attract visitors. Despite being located away from dense residential areas, the spot sees frequent footfall from citizens for walks, picnics, and small gatherings. However, irresponsible disposal of waste by visitors has further worsened the condition of the well and its surroundings.During the inspection, Dani-Wakhare directed civic officials to prepare a comprehensive report and explore conservation options. She stressed the need to preserve Nagpur's historical assets while ensuring public safety. Speaking to TOI, Dani-Wakhare said the inspection was undertaken following repeated reports and citizen complaints regarding the neglect of the well."We visited the site along with NMC officials, fire department personnel, corporators, and residents to assess the situation on the ground. The condition of the well calls for urgent intervention," she said. Dani-Wakhare further informed that NMC chief engineer Manoj Talwar, who is also a member of the Heritage Committee, will review the structure's status. "We will ascertain whether the well is included in the heritage list. If it is, restoration will be carried out as per prescribed conservation protocols. Even if it is not formally listed, we will prepare a plan to rejuvenate it while preserving its historical character," Dani-Wakhare added.
