Nagpur: Gusty winds, thunderstorms and scattered pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday evening uprooted trees at multiple locations across Nagpur, damaging a car and around 15 slum huts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain over the next two days.
The evening showers brought relief from intense heat after Nagpur recorded a maximum temperature of 43.8°C during the day. In Prabhag 28, a tree collapsed onto a parked car. A team from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation's garden department rushed to the spot and cleared the obstruction.
A large tree uprooted by strong winds also crashed onto slum dwellings in Kumbhartoli, Sitabuldi, around 6.30pm. Former corporator Sanjay Bengale alerted the civic control room after the mishap.
A firefighting team led by Cotton Market Fire Station officer-in-charge Bhagwan Wagh reached the spot and launched a clearance operation. Officials said nearly 15 huts were damaged. Fire brigade personnel cut and removed the tree to eliminate further risk.
Similar tree-fall incidents were reported from other parts of the city as strong winds swept through Nagpur. Civic teams remained on alert to respond to weather-related emergencies.
Despite the damage, no injuries or loss of life were reported. Authorities have advised citizens to avoid standing near old trees, electric poles and temporary structures during thunderstorms and high winds.
