NOIDA: Sale and registration of any new vehicle not complying with BS-IV emission norms will not be allowed in the city from Thursday. The Uttar Pradesh transport department has issued a notification making the the stricter pollution control standard mandatory for new vehicles.
“The central government had recently made amendments in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Bharat Stage emission IV has been made necessary in some cities including in Noida.
Earlier we used to register vehicles which met the BS-III norms,” said Rachna Yaduvanshi, ARTO (administration) of Noida. The transport department will, however, continue to register BS-III compliant vehicles as an exception, if they ply on inter-state permits or national permits, the office said.
Already, the BS-IV standard is applicable in almost all major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, and more and more cities are being added to the list. The government has planned a nation wide rollout of the standard by April 2017.
Transport department officials said the government has already made BS-IV grade fuel available to suit BS-IV compliant vehicles in the NCR. Officials said that all the vehicles registered on or after October 1, 2015, shall duly fulfill the BS-IV standards.
Residents have welcomed the move, saying that the move will help to reduce carbon emissions and will make the city more environment-friendly. “Recently, the National Green Tribunal had banned vehicles more than 10 years old in Delhi and NCR. With the ntroduction of the BS-IV standard, carbon footprint should go down further,” said Vishal Kapil, a resident of Sector 26.
