PATNA: Speaker of the Bihar legislative assembly Uday Narayan Choudhary on Wednesday advised the state government to introduce the system of distribution of free medicines among patients belonging to below poverty line (BPL) families at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS). Choudhary said this practice has already been introduced at other government-run hospitals across the state.
Addressing a function organised at IGIMS to mark World Cancer Day, he advised the institute authorities to set up a cell on the institute campus for conducting research on indigenous medicinal herbs to find the cheapest and the most effective treatment of deadly diseases like cancer. Health minister Nandkishore Yadav, who also happens to be the chairman of the IGIMS governing body, said both he and the assembly Speaker have suffered the trauma of cancer in their families. Choudhary lost his wife to cancer while Yadav's wife is undergoing treatment for an advanced stage of cancer.
The health minister said for early detection of cancer facilities for tests should be made available at the nearest hospitals. The government is working in that direction, he said. Those present on the occasion included Dr G K Rath of AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr Diwakar Dalela of KGMC, Lucknow, Dr S C Sharma of PGI, Chandigarh, Viji Venkatesh, head of Max Foundation, Asia-Pacific region, Nitin Navin, MLA, and Ganga Prasad, MLC, IGIMS director Dr Arun Kumar and Dr Uday Kumar.
