Puducherry GH doctor held for duping nurse of Rs 1 crore, swindling six sovereigns of gold jewellery

PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry police arrested a doctor posted at the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute on charges of duping an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) at a govt primary health centre at Ariankuppam of Rs 1 crore and swindling six sovereigns of gold jewellery from her after promising to sell his plot in the town limits. The arrested doctor has been identified as Dr Jawahar Kennedy.

In her complaint, A Jacqueline Aroakia Selvi, 48, stated that she transferred Rs 1 crore online in three instalments in July 2024 to the account of the Kennedy’s wife Suganthi Onorine Marcelline after he had promised to sell his plot. She said the doctor received six sovereigns of gold jewellery from her in July 2023 but did not return the valuables.

Selvi said she and her husband, Sagayalourdusamy, visited Kennedy’s house and his clinic several times, requesting him return Rs 1 crore and six sovereign gold jewellery he received. She said during their last visit, Kennedy abused and harassed her. She lodged a complaint with Ariankuppam police, who booked Kennedy under sections 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman), 318 (2) (cheating) and 351 (2) (criminal intimidation) of BNS and arrested the doctor. He was remanded in judicial custody.
