PUDUCHERRY: A fast-track court handling Pocso cases on Thursday sentenced a 44-year-old private security guard to five years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old schoolgirl in 2023. Judge M D Sumathi directed the govt to pay a compensation of 1 lakh to the girl.

According to special public prosecutor S Patcheappan, the minor survivor used to play at her friend's house at an apartment complex after school until her mother arrived to pick her up. The woman works in a private firm and usually picks up the girl around 6pm.

On March 2 last year, the security guard at the apartment complex, R Appu alias Arputharaj, lured the girl to a secluded place and sexually assaulted her.

The prosecution said the security guard touched the private parts of the girl and let her off with a warning not to reveal the incident to anyone.

The girl narrated the incident to her mother when she arrived. The mother lodged a complaint with police, who booked Arputharaj under section 10 (punishment for aggravated sexual assault) of the Pocso Act and arrested him.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
