Pune: Cybercrooks posed as a woman and cheated a software engineer (28) from Kharadi out of Rs 2.5 lakh by recording his objectionable videos and photographs.
The victim lodged a complaint with the Kharadi police on Tuesday evening, stating that the cheating took place on July 4.
According to the police, the techie hails from Tamil Nadu. He stays in a rented flat in Kharadi and is employed with a prominent software company located in Kharadi.
"He was looking for an online dating site. The victim saw a woman on his mobile screen. She promised to be his friend and called him. She told him that she would be calling him in the night," the police said.
Later, in the night, the woman undressed herself on the video call and asked the techie to remove his clothes as well, said the police, adding that the techie then stripped himself on the video call and the suspects recorded his act.
"Afterwards, the suspects sent a small videoclip to the victim. It was to inform him that they recorded him in act," police said. The suspects, according to the police, threatened the techie that they would upload these videos and photographs on social media sites and would tag his relatives and friends online. They claimed that this would defame him in public, police said. They demanded money if the techie did not want to be defamed. The suspects then shared details of three bank accounts with the victim, and the victim transferred Rs 2.5 lakh to their two bank accounts.
