PUNE: Ahead of annual Palkhi procession, all private and goods transport vehicles will not be allowed to enter the Alandi town up to July 1, according to an order issued recently by the district collector Vikas Deshmukh.
The movement of vehicles will be restricted in the town to avoid traffic jams during the departure of the Sant Dnyneshwar Maharaj Palkhi, as lakhs of devotees are expected to participate in the annual procession which will head towards the town of Pandharpur in Solapur district via Pune city.
Deshmukh has said that only those vehicles with authorized passes issued by the administration and government-owned vehicles will be allowed to enter the town. All other vehicles including private two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, other four-wheelers, transport vehicles and heavy vehicles such as trucks and trolleys will not be allowed to enter the town.
Besides the restriction of plying of vehicles in Alandi, some roads connecting or passing through Alandi will also remain closed for traffic. As per the orders, road stretches including Pune-Alandi, Chakan-Alandi, Vadgaon Ghenand-Alandi, Marakal-Alandi and Bhosari-Alandi will remain closed for vehicular traffic on the day the Palkhi will depart towards Pune. Vehicle users have been appealed to make use of alternative routes for transportation. The Palkhi procession is scheduled to reach the city on Monday (July 1).
