After years of coughing blood, CG youth gets life-saving lung surgery

The department of heart, chest and vascular surgery at state-run Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital has saved the life of a 25-year-old man through a complex surgery. The patient, a resident of Chataud near Abhanpur, had been suffering from a severe condition where he coughed up blood for the past 10 years. The condition, medically known as hemoptysis, had worsened over the last month.

Doctors stated that the patient was losing 50 ml to 70 ml of blood with every cough, which could have been fatal without immediate intervention. Investigations, including a CT scan, revealed a large cavity in the lower lobe of the right lung with a fungal infection called aspergilloma. This condition is commonly seen in patients with a history of tuberculosis.

Dr Krishna Kant Sahu, head of the department, led the team that performed a lobectomy to remove the infected part of the lung. “The surgery is high-risk as there is a danger of damaging major blood vessels like the pulmonary artery and pulmonary vein,” Dr Sahu said.

The team used an advanced lung stapler gun technique to minimize complications such as air leaks. The patient recovered quickly and has been discharged from the hospital. The entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Yojana.

Dr Vivek Choudhary, dean of Pt Nehru Memorial Medical College, praised the coordinated efforts of the medical team. Dr Santosh Sonkar, medical superintendent, added that the hospital remains committed to providing high-quality healthcare to needy patients through the Ayushman scheme.
