Ranchi: The Ranchi police would launch a special drive against squatters on roads from Wednesday in a bid to check traffic jams in the state capital. Prior to the drive, police have started an awareness campaign among citizens regarding traffic rules.
Police have appealed that shop owners should not be displaying their products on roads and asked street vendors to not hinder the movement of vehicles. Citizens have been urged to give way to ambulances. Parking of vehicles should be at designated places, police said.
Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha said, “We have started distributing around 10,000 pamphlets in the city to create awareness. When shopkeepers stop putting their products on roads there would be more space for movement of vehicles. Small roadside vendors like vegetable sellers would be asked to shift to the end of flanks of roads. This would create more space on roads even as their source of livelihood would not be prevented. Where needed help of Ranchi Municipal Corporation would also be taken.”
The SSP has directed that all police stations must cooperate with the traffic police in managing the traffic. The step has been taken in view of the manpower shortage in traffic department.
Sinha has instructed police officers and staff to follow traffic norms. He said often police officers and staff do not wear helmet and seat belts while driving. In case they are found violating rules the department would impose fines and also take disciplinary actions against them. he said.
