Clean sweep push: RMC slaps nearly Rs 4 lakh in fines in citywide cleanliness crackdown; 10 dedicated road teams deployed ahead of survey
Ranchi: In a major enforcement push ahead of Swachh Survekshan (cleanliness survey), the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) on Wednesday imposed a total fine of Rs 3,95,100 on violators during a citywide inspection targeting encroachments, waste mismanagement and sanitation violations.
The campaign was headed by additional administrator Sanjay Kumar, with all senior officials undertaking field inspections across major roads and commercial areas. The action was carried out under the provisions of the Jharkhand Municipal Act, 2011.
As part of the efforts to strengthen visible cleanliness, garbage-free main roads and hotspot elimination, the corporation has operationalised 10 dedicated road management teams (DRMTs). Each team has been tagged with a city manager or city mission manager and a senior official to ensure accountability, monitoring and time-bound compliance.
Kumar said the corporation is taking concrete steps to improve sanitation standards across the city. “Ten dedicated teams have been deployed along major stretches. Strict action will be taken against encroachment and garbage dumping. During inspection on Purulia Road, especially near educational establishments, encroachments were found, fined on the spot and removed,” he said.
He added that bylanes are also under focus. “We are strengthening garbage management in inner areas as well. Upon receiving complaints, teams will act swiftly,” Kumar added.
Inspections covered road and footpath encroachments, availability of public dustbins, disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) waste, illegal vending and parking, use of single-use plastic, cleanliness of drains and public toilets, illegal hoardings and trade licence compliance.
According to an official statement issued by RMC, fines included Rs 1,09,900 for encroachment, Rs 1,27,000 for illegal advertisements, Rs 50,000 each for absence of dustbins and trade licence violations, Rs 17,500 for improper waste disposal, Rs 36,900 for littering, Rs 2,700 for single-use plastic use, Rs 1,000 for no-parking violations and Rs 100 for urinating in public.
Officials adding that the intensified drive will continue in the coming days to secure a strong performance for Ranchi in the national cleanliness survey.
