Ranchi: Jharkhand governor Santosh Gangwar on Friday administered the oath of office to former Bombay high court Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak who assumed the office of the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand high court (HC).
The swearing-in ceremony was organized at the Birsa Munda Mandap in the Lok Bhawan in Ranchi. The function was attended by chief minister Hemant Soren and other sitting judges of the HC, judicial officers, lawyers and govt officials.

Justice Sonak’s candidature as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand HC was cleared by the Supreme Court collegium on Dec 18. Justice Sonak has replaced former Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan who superannuated from office on Jan 8. He is the 17th Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court since its establishment in Nov 2000.
Justice Sonak born on Nov 28, 1964 completed his school education from Don Bosco High School, Panaji, Goa.
He later graduated in science from Dhempe College of Arts & Science, and finished his LL.B. from M.S. College of Law, Panaji, Goa (affiliated to Bombay University) in First Class.
