BOKARO: Angry over the death of a local JMM leader in a road accident, people here blocked the road for several hours and vandalized vehicles near Lal Chowk under Bermo Sub-Division on Tuesday.
The victim, Mahesh Ram Turi, was the block secretary of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). He was riding a pillion on a motorbike with his friend Om Prakash Munda when a coal-loaded dumper hit them from behind.

Turi fell between the tyres of the dumper and was immediately crushed to death. The duo was on their way to Bokaro Thermal from Judamana village. tnn
Munda also sustained critical injuries and has been admitted to a local hospital for treatment. Following the incident, the residents blocked the road and damaged three dumpers on that route. They broke windscreens, deflated tyres and damaged the diesel tanks of the dumpers.
Few residents also lit a fire on the road using diesel from the dumpers. Police initially had trouble controlling control the unruly mob as they were fewer in number.
Dumri MLA Jagarnath Mahto also joined the protest and sat on dharna demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased.
The traffic jam that ensued owing to the uproar was lifted after six hours only when police and administrative officials assured compensation to Turi's family. Bermo inspector Ramji Prasad said traffic has been restored on the road. A case has been lodged with Bermo police station in this connection. Turi was a resident of Nawadih.
