RMC begins drain cleaning and road repair works

Ranchi: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has launched ward-wise drain cleaning and road repair work to tackle monsoon-related problems. Inspections of damaged roads, unsafe hoardings, and drains are also under way.

Waterlogging, overflowing drains, potholed roads, garbage accumulation, severe traffic disruption, and unsafe hoardings are recurring problems at Main Road, Harmu, Lalpur, Ratu Road, and several inner residential localities during heavy rain.

Municipal commissioner Sushant Gaurav said, “The corporation has intensified pre-monsoon preparations to minimise disruptions. Drain cleaning work is being carried out in all wards on a roster basis. Teams have been instructed to ensure timely removal of silt and garbage so that rainwater flows smoothly and waterlogging is curbed.”

“Teams have been deployed to identify and remove dead trees. Pruning work will also be carried out to prevent accidents during strong winds and heavy rain,” he added.

However, residents and roadside vendors say temporary cleaning alone may not solve Ranchi’s recurring monsoon troubles. Manoj Gupta, a fruit vendor at Kokar veggie market, said, “Even light rainfall causes waterlogging and affects daily business. Drains overflow and garbage starts piling up. Every year, work happens before monsoon but problems return.”

Amit Kumar, a resident of Harmu, said waterlogging and broken roads become a yearly problem. “Every monsoon the same areas get flooded and roads become difficult to use. Cleaning before rains is important, but permanent drainage improvement is needed,” he said.
