NAMAKKAL: A fire broke out at a godown near Pallipalayam in Namakkal district on Saturday, destroying plastic raw materials worth around Rs 1 crore.
The godown belonged to Sakhubar Ali of Periyar Nagar. Raw materials required for the manufacture of plastic products had been stored in the godown. The raw materials were to be sent to plastic manufacturing units in Delhi and Bengaluru.
On Saturday, while employees were engaged in work, old plastic products stored at the back of the godown caught fire. "The fire gradually spread to the other parts of the godown," Sakhubar Ali said. The workers alerted the fire and rescue services department.
Fire and rescue services personnel from Kumarapalayam reached the spot with three fire tenders and extinguished the blaze.
The reason for the fire accident was yet be ascertained. The Kumarapalayam police registered a case.
