Shillong: Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Fit India call, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma said he would 'walk to work' every Wednesday to create awareness on the multifarious benefits of walking.
On Thursday, Conrad walked from his residence at Polo Grounds to his office in the Main Secretariat - a distance of around 2 kilometres.
After launching the Fit India Movement at the Yojana Bhawan, Conrad said fitness has been a part of the tradition and culture of the people in the state. "The problem is that we are burdened with responsibilities and hence we forget to stay fit. I request all to walk to work every Wednesday," Conrad added.
The chief minister said that apart from fitness, walking would also bring down carbon emissions and ease traffic congestions in the city.
