THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has termed as a "dangerous trend" the recent judicial conviction of Dr P.V. George, IMA''s president-designate, for the death of a woman patient.
This is the first instance in Kerala where the leader of the medical organisation itself was convicted for the death of a patient.
Dr George, a senior gynaecologist, was awarded an year of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 by the Kannur magistrate court after his patient died while delivering a baby. The husband and relatives of the woman accused the doctor of negligence.
IMA state president P.T. Cherian and Secretary T. Suresh Kumar said in a statement that the patient had known complications and it was Dr George''s constant care and expertise which enabled her to become a mother. However, she died of post-delivery problems. Dr George has approached the sessions court against the conviction.
