Trichy: A 12-year-old boy riding a moped rammed the vehicle into a 67-year-old man and his 3-year-old grandson at Sengattupattin here on Monday. Police booked the boy and his father on charges of rash and negligent driving and endangering personal safety.
Thuraiyur police said C Ramasamy was walking near the Sengattupatti bus stop holding his grandson N Dhaswanth. The 12-year-old boy took his father's moped for a ride and lost control over it and hit Ramasamy from behind.
Dhaswanth fell and injured his left leg while Ramasamy suffered injuries to his hip and left leg. Dhaswanth was treated as an outpatient while Ramasamy was admitted to a private hospital in Thuraiyur.
Based on a complaint from Ramasamy, police registered a case.
It remains a common occurrence in Trichy rural areas where minor boys ride motorcycles without licence and helmet. Police admitted that they seldom took legal action against the violators or seized their vehicles.
Trichy city police have been taking action against underage driving by registering cases against riders and vehicle owners. Yet, such violations continue in the city too.
