Doctors remove 30 kg tumour from woman’s abdomen
Thanjavur: A team of doctors at Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital successfully removed a 30 kg tumour from the abdomen of a 62-year-old woman on Saturday.
The patient, Maha Abilesh Begum from Elangadu village in Thiruvaiyaru, came to the district collector's office on Nov 4 for a grievance redressal meeting, where district collector Priyanka Pankajam noticed her visibly enlarged abdomen. Concerned about her condition, the collector directed hospital staff to provide her with immediate medical assistance.
The surgery took place on Nov 9 under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. "The patient had been suffering from this tumour for the past three decades," said the district collector, addressing reporters on Wednesday. "Initially, she was hesitant to undergo treatment, but with some persuasion, she agreed. Volunteers from Vaanavil Maiam supported her throughout the week. After three days of post-surgery monitoring, she has been discharged with prescribed medication."
A medical official, speaking anonymously, explained, "It was an ovarian cyst with fibroadenoma. We also removed the patient's uterus and ovaries. The tumour has been sent for biopsy."
