Trichy: MDMK principal secretary and Trichy MP Durai Vaiko has urged railway minister
Ashwini Vaishnaw to sanction three new road over bridges (RoBs) in rural areas of Trichy district to address traffic congestion and improve connectivity.
Durai Vaiko who met the minister in Delhi on Wednesday, accompanied by his father and Rajya Sabha MP Vaiko, also sought stoppages for express and intercity trains at key stations in the district, including Thiruverumbur and Samudram.
Highlighting the pressing need for infrastructure upgrades, the MP emphasized that level crossing 317/E at Melakumaresapuram near Thiruverumbur serves around 10,000 residents from 15 villages commuting to industries and educational institutions in Trichy. Frequent closures of the crossing during peak hours cause severe traffic bottlenecks, he said, while requesting the construction of an RoB at the site to alleviate the problem.
Durai Vaiko also pressed for RoBs at level crossing 265 in Inamkulathur near Manikandam and at Manjathidal, where Southern Railway's ongoing MEMU shed project has obstructed an existing pathway. He noted that in Inamkulathur, daily closures of the level crossing to accommodate 50 train movements disrupt commuters travelling to Trichy.
The MP also sought halts at Thiruverumbur for superfast express trains, including Cholan, Rameswaram, Ernakulam and Tiruchendur expresses. He also demanded train stoppages at Samudram station near Manapparai for Sengottai, Dindigul intercity, Viluppuram intercity and Mayiladuthurai express trains that were discontinued post-Covid. Durai Vaiko further called for widening of a road at level crossing 244 in Srirangam to ease traffic congestion in the area.
