Gujarat couple try to end their lives, failed; husband kills woman

Udaipur: A couple from Gujarat on Monday tried to commit suicide by hanging themselves in Bichhiwara area of Dungarpur. The wife tried to hang herself first but when she did not succeed, the husband strangled her to death. Later, he tried to commit suicide by slitting the veins of both his hands. He then reached the police station and told police that he tried to commit suicide due to debt, but did not succeed.
Bichhiwara police SHO Ashok Kumar said that on Tuesday morning, Akshay Sikhlighar (32), a resident of New Maninagar area in Ahmedabad came to Bichhiwara station with slit veins and bleeding profusely.Police took him to Bichhiwara Hospital. Akshay told police that the body of his wife, Jyoti Sikligar was lying in the room of a hotel near Ratanpur border. Akshay also informed police that he operated a travel agency in Gujarat and his family was distressed due to monetary loss.
He also told police that on February 5, their wedding anniversary, he along with his wife decided to commit suicide. Hence, they both stayed in a hotel located at Ratanpur border of Dungarpur and attempted suicide after celebrating their wedding anniversary.
Police said Jyoti’s body was found lying on the bed of the hotel room. The couple’s ID cards were recovered from the spot. Police said that two separate suicide notes written by the couple in Gujarati language were found, saying they were committing suicide under pressure of debt.
