MSU puts brakes on personal vehicles every Monday
No Vehicle Day Rolled Out After PM’s Fuel Conservation Call
Vadodara: In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation, Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) has decided to observe every Monday as a “No Vehicle Day” across campuses, urging students and staff to leave personal vehicles at home and shift to greener modes of travel.
In a circular issued by registrar Prof K M Chudasama, the university asked students and employees to refrain from using personal vehicles on Mondays and to instead opt for cycling, walking or public transport.
The initiative aims to reduce fuel consumption, promote environmentally responsible conduct and instil sustainable habits among the university community.
The circular said the decision was inspired by the Prime Minister’s appeal to cut India’s dependence on imported petrol and diesel, noting that rising fuel costs place a heavy burden on the national economy. It also cited the Gujarat governor’s appeal to universities to adopt fuel-saving steps that build environmental awareness and civic responsibility among youth.
MSU appealed to students and staff to adopt fuel- and energy-saving practices in daily life, emphasizing that small individual efforts can add up to significant national savings and environmental protection.
Beyond the weekly No Vehicle Day, the university has encouraged carpooling, cycling and the use of public transport on other working days as well. The circular has been forwarded to deans, principals, directors, department heads, wardens, librarians and administrative heads to ensure effective implementation.
The decision comes amid a broader push by higher educational institutions in Gujarat to promote sustainable commuting and curb fuel use. Earlier, Sardar Patel University in Vallabh Vidyanagar introduced free bus services for employees living in the staff colony and encouraged teaching and non-teaching staff to use public transport and to carpool where feasible. Gujarat University has also been promoting similar fuel-saving measures on its campus.
