VARANASI: Vishal Bharat Sansthan (VBS), a local NGO, will carry out a 'Beti Bachao, Desh Bachao' march to spread awareness among people against female foeticide in the city on Sunday.
The increasing gap in sex ratio has set the alarm bells ringing, said Rajiv Srivastava of VBS, adding that the statistics of new Census indicate that there are 940 females on 1,000 males in the country, and in Uttar Pradesh, the figure is just 908.

He said that it is unfortunate that the evils like female foeticide and infanticide still exist in the society. Besides, the girls are also discriminated against and neglected for basic nutrition, education and living standard. A UN reports suggest that about 7,50,000 girls are aborted every year in India.
The girls continue to face discrimination. According to a study conducted by the IMS-BHU doctors on the nutritional status of adolescent girls in the rural areas, majority of rural adolescent girls in Varanasi suffer from chronic energy deficiency.
