GVMC plans to enhance efficiency of garbage transfer stations

Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is planning to improve the efficiency and management of garbage transfer stations within its jurisdiction. To this end, every CLAP vehicle will be required to spend at least 45 minutes at each garbage transfer station to ensure waste is properly unloaded into the CCS hopper units. Strict measures will be enforced to prevent waste from being dumped outside designated areas, and any driver found disposing waste on the platform instead of the hopper will face salary deductions.To handle the daily inflow of waste brought by the vehicles, GVMC plans to optimise the closed contract system project by increasing its capacity in line with the volume of garbage received. The mechanical supervising engineer, chief medical officer, and involved contractors will work closely together to monitor the system and implement necessary improvements. At the Gajuwaka transfer station, portable compactors will be activated immediately, while additional compactors funded by the 15th finance commission will be installed at other transfer stations as required to prevent waste from being dumped on the platform. All CCTV cameras across transfer stations will be repaired and reinstated to enhance monitoring. GVMC commissioner Ketan Garg said they are also planning landscaping projects at each transfer station, with budgets estimated between Rs 20 and Rs 30 lakh, to improve the surrounding environment and hygiene. Furthermore, previously approved work on the material sorting system will be completed and brought into full operation to improve waste segregation. Vehicle maintenance will be strictly documented through the dedicated app developed by a private organisation, ensuring transparency and efficiency in repairs. The responsibility for security arrangements and the overall operation and maintenance of the transfer stations will lie with the respective engineering depts and contracted agencies.
