SRIKAKULAM: Five students of Dr. BR Ambedkar Social Welfare Residential Gurukul College for women were bitten by rats while they were sleeping in their hostel in Tamarapalli in Narsannapeta Assembly Constituency in the district.
The incident took place in the night of Monday and was shifted to a community health center in Narasannapeta. The victims were identified as Intermediate second-year student Rohini and the remaining intermediate first-year students Harika, Balamani, Sravanti, and Soujanya.

Though the incident took place at midnight on Monday, it came to light on Wednesday.
According to sources, all the victim students were shifted to the community health center on Wednesday for blood and other medical tests. After they were bitten by mice, the college staff immediately provided first aid to them and later shifted to the hospital where the students were given vaccination.
The principal of the college informed the media that vaccinated the girls and put the mesh in the entire dormitory to avoid any rat menace. “Students are doing well. We have filled all rat holes and also placed rat mats. We have been taking all precautionary measures,” the principal said.
After learning about the incident, the district collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundarkar enquired about the condition of the girls and instructed the Joint Director of Animal Husbandry V Jayaraju to address the rat menace. He ordered concerned authorities for sanitation drive and take proper maintenance The JD visited the hostel along with his staff and arranged Rodenticide and also cages to catch the mice.
