Comedy Nights With Kapil: Probable reasons why Kapil Sharma says NO to adult films

It seems Kapil Sharma is shy to promote sex openly. Though comedians are often heard cracking non-veg jokes and 'pushing the envelope', it seems Kapil is not ready to do that. Hence, he has reportedly refused to promote Bollywood erotic thriller Hate Story 2 on his show. And the reason is that he thinks the movie has a lot of sexual content. Quoting a source, a Bollywoodmantra.com report says that since the movie stars TV actors Surveen Chawla and Jay Bhanushali, the filmmakers wanted to promote the movie on the show Comedy Nights With Kapil. However, the filmmakers were shocked when their request was turned down by Kapil as he felt the subject of the film was bold and not meant for family audience. However, this is not the first time that Kapil has refused to promote movies with sexual content on his show. Last year, he refused to host Sunny Leone on the show to promote her film Jackpot because of her background as a former adult film star. This decision drew a lot of ire from the film fraternity as mainstream actors like Shah Rukh Khan had shown his willingness to work with Sunny. However, Kapil changed his mind and allowed producer Ekta Kapoor and Sunny to promote Ragini MMS 2 on his show later. Let us explore the probable reasons why Kapil is not ready to promote adult movies on his show.

Avoid controversies: After being slammed by women activists across the country for making fun of pregnant women, Kapil Sharma seemingly wants to avoid controversies at all cost. In one of his previous episodes, the comedian had cracked a joke about a pregnant woman delivering a baby during commuting on pothole-filled roads. His joke drew a lot of ire and was considered derogatory and insulting by women groups. As a result two women groups, Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan and Kaydeshir Wagne, had lodged a complaint with the Maharashtra State Women’s Commission, seeking legal action. Hence, Kapil may not want to take any chance and avoid any more controversies for his show.

Target audience: Comedy Nights With Kapil is a show that caters to audiences of all ages. It is telecast on weekends and at prime time so that the whole family can watch the show together. Hence, you will never hear very cheap jokes on the show. Even if Kapil or his family members crack some non-veg jokes, they do it subtly. Kapil Sharma perhaps does not want to compromise with the essence and target audience of the show. Thereby he possibly refuses actors to promote those films that have a lot of sexual context in it. However, the only exception he made was during the release of Ragini MMS 2 when he allowed Sunny Leone on the show. And that could be because the movie was produced by Ekta Kapoor, one of the most influential women of Indian TV.

No dirty comedy please: Kapil Sharma is very popular among both masses as well as classes as he understands the pulse of the audience. He knows one sure way to appeal to audiences is to steer clear of direct jokes on sex. A report in Yahoo.com says that Kapil gets to work at least two hours before show time everyday to make sure that nothing cheap or x-rated has crept into the script. Quoting Kapil, the report adds that if you do dirty comedy, only some people will watch. He makes sure that his shows are scripted in such a way that a father can watch the show with his daughter. Probably that's why he avoids entertaining any filmmakers who want to promote their films on sex and sleaze.

Brand image: When big film stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone come on your show to promote their films, you have to maintain a certain standard of the show. Kapil is very particular that his show maintains high standards. That could be the reason he avoids promoting films that are high on sexual content and may hurt the sensibilities of Indian audiences. Seems like he wants to maintain the respectability of his show and does not want to be counted as some cheap, C-grade comedy show which entertains any and every guest.
