JoSAA Counselling 2026: Step-by-step admission process for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs explained
The JoSAA counselling process is one of the most important stages for engineering aspirants in India after JEE Main and JEE Advanced results are declared. For many students, this is the moment when years of preparation finally turn into an actual college seat. At the same time, it is also a phase that often feels confusing, with ranks, categories, quotas and changing cut-offs all coming into play at once.
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority or JoSAA is an authority which handles the process of admissions in the top engineering colleges in India. It includes the Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology and Government Funded Technical Institutions.
It does not conduct individual admission procedures; rather it consolidates all the procedures into one single platform through which seats are allotted according to the ranking, preferences, reservation criteria and other requirements.
Students who qualify JEE Advanced 2026 are eligible for IIT admissions. For NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, a valid JEE Main 2026 rank is required along with JoSAA registration and choice filling.
Interestingly, students who clear JEE Advanced can also apply for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs using their JEE Main rank, which keeps more options open.
The counselling process moves step by step. It starts with registration, followed by filling college and branch preferences. After that, mock seat allotments are released before the actual rounds begin.
These mock results are not final but help students understand where they might stand and whether they need to change their choices.
The first step is simple. Candidates log in to the JoSAA portal using their JEE credentials and confirm participation. Without this, they are not considered for seat allotment.
This is where most of the thinking happens. Students select institutes and branches across IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs and arrange them in order of preference.
Once satisfied, they must lock the choices before the deadline. If they don’t, the last saved list is automatically locked.
Before actual seat allocation, JoSAA releases mock results. These give a rough idea of what a student may get based on current preferences.
Many students then adjust their list after seeing these results to improve their chances.
The official allotment happens in multiple rounds. Seats are given based on rank, category, seat availability and the order of preferences filled.
If a student’s rank matches the cutoff for a particular seat and it appears in their list, they are allotted that seat.
After accepting a seat, students must upload documents, verify details and pay the required fee online. This step confirms eligibility and authenticity.
Once documents are verified, the seat is temporarily confirmed. Students then need to physically report to their allotted institute to complete admission formalities.
JoSAA covers admissions to over 100 top engineering institutes, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and several GFTIs, offering more than 60,000 seats in total.
Seat allocation depends on several factors—rank, category, home state quota, gender, demand for a branch, seat matrix and, most importantly, the order in which choices are filled.
Because of this, even small changes in preference order can sometimes change the final outcome.
Students usually need their JEE scorecard, Class 10 and 12 certificates, category or PwD certificate (if applicable), ID proof and passport-size photographs. Exact requirements may differ slightly depending on the institute.

How the process works
The counselling process moves step by step. It starts with registration, followed by filling college and branch preferences. After that, mock seat allotments are released before the actual rounds begin.

Choice filling and locking
This is where most of the thinking happens. Students select institutes and branches across IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs and arrange them in order of preference.

Seat allocation rounds
The official allotment happens in multiple rounds. Seats are given based on rank, category, seat availability and the order of preferences filled.
If a student’s rank matches the cutoff for a particular seat and it appears in their list, they are allotted that seat.
Options after allotment
Once a seat is allotted, students can choose one of three options:- Freeze: accept the seat and exit further rounds
- Float: accept but remain open for better options
- Slide: stay in the same institute but try for a better branch
Reporting and verification
After accepting a seat, students must upload documents, verify details and pay the required fee online. This step confirms eligibility and authenticity.
Final admission
Once documents are verified, the seat is temporarily confirmed. Students then need to physically report to their allotted institute to complete admission formalities.
Institutes involved
JoSAA covers admissions to over 100 top engineering institutes, including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and several GFTIs, offering more than 60,000 seats in total.
What really affects allotment?
Seat allocation depends on several factors—rank, category, home state quota, gender, demand for a branch, seat matrix and, most importantly, the order in which choices are filled.
