GATE 2020: Things you should know

Every year, Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is being conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE. This year, Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Delhi is the organising institute for the GATE.

GATE 2020 will be conducted on February 1, 2, 8, and 9, 2020, for 25 papers. If you are one of the GATE examinees, here are some of the important things you need to know.

​GATE exam dates

The GATE 2020 will be conducted on February 1, 2, 8 and 9, 2020. The examinations will be conducted in the afternoon (9.30 am to 12.30 pm) and afternoon (2.30 pm to 5.30 pm) sessions. GATE 2020 examinations for some of the papers may be held in multiple sessions. However, a candidate is allowed to appear for the examination in one session only.

​GATE 2020 admit card

The GATE 2020 admit card was released on January 3, 2020, on the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) website. The candidates who are yet to download the admit card can obtain the same from the official website of GOAPS — http://gate.iitd.ac.in/ - at the earliest. No candidates would be allowed to enter the examination hall without presenting the GATE admit card.

GATE 2020 exam

The GATE 2020 examination for 25 papers will be conducted in an online Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The questions for the GATE 2020 examination will be shown on the computer screen. A virtual scientific calculator will be available on the screen during the examination. Candidates will be provided with scribble pads for any rough work. The candidate should write his/her name and registration number on the scribble pad before using it. The scribble pad should be returned to the invigilator at the end of the examination.

​GATE 2020 exam pattern

GATE 2020 would contain questions of two different types in all the papers — Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT). Multiple Choice Questions will carry 1 or 2 marks each for all the papers and sections in GATE 2020 examination. MCQs are objective and each question will have a choice of four answers, out of which the candidate has to mark the correct answer.

Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions will carry 1 or 2 marks each in all the papers and sections. The answer for NAT question will be a signed real number, which needs to be entered by the candidate using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor (keyboard of the computer will be disabled). Candidates should note that no choices will be shown for these types of questions.

Things that are not allowed in the examination hall

The following things are not allowed in the GATE examination hall — Personal calculators, wristwatches, mobile phones or any other electronic devices are NOT allowed inside the examination hall. Candidates are advised not to bring any charts/tables/papers into the examination hall. It is to be noted that GATE officials will not be responsible for the safe-keep of the candidates’ personal belongings.
