Kamrup Metro schools in Guwahati to remain closed till January 6 due to cold wave: Check official notice here
All government and provincialised schools in Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam will remain closed for one week due to extreme cold conditions, according to an official order issued on Tuesday.
The decision follows a sharp drop in daytime temperatures in the state capital, where the mercury fell 6.4 degrees Celsius below normal. The district administration has directed schools to remain shut from December 31, 2025 to January 6, 2026. Classes will resume on January 7.
The Chief Minister’s Office said the closure was ordered in view of the ongoing cold wave and to ensure student safety. Provincialised schools are privately run institutions that have been taken over by the government.
The Inspector of Schools of Kamrup Metropolitan district issued an advisory asking all heads of schools to inform students, parents and staff about the closure, PTI reports. Schools have been instructed not to conduct any academic or co curricular activities during this period and to prepare for smooth resumption after reopening. Private schools have been advised to take their own decision in the interest of students.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Guwahati on Tuesday was 18.1 degrees Celsius, which was 6.4 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature stood at 15.1 degrees Celsius, 4.3 degrees above normal.
The weather office has predicted cloudy skies with light rain or drizzle in the city, along with shallow to moderate fog till Thursday morning. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 19 degrees Celsius and 14 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The daily weather bulletin said an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over Northeast Assam at 1.5 km above mean sea level, while another circulation over north Bangladesh has weakened.
Over the past two to three days, several parts of the state, including Guwahati, have seen cloudy conditions with intermittent daytime drizzle. People have been using roadside wood fires for warmth, while demand for heavy woollens has increased in markets.
While the cold has disrupted daily life, particularly for poorer sections, some residents said the weather has added to the atmosphere ahead of New Year celebrations.
