MBOSE postpones two Class 12 board exams in violence-hit West Garo Hills; new dates later
The Meghalaya Board of School Education has postponed two Class 12 examinations in the West Garo Hills district after clashes broke out between tribal and non-tribal groups over the nomination process for local council polls, officials told -PTI.
The papers of the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) Examination for Music and Anthropology, scheduled on March 11 and March 12, have been postponed in the district.
Examinations in the remaining districts of Meghalaya will continue according to the existing schedule.
“The HSSLC examinations, scheduled for March 11 (Music) and March 12 (Anthropology), stand cancelled for West Garo Hills only. The same shall be rescheduled for some other dates to be notified later,” the board’s Director Accreditation and Controller of Examinations TR Laloo said, according to PTI.
More than 29,000 students are appearing for the HSSLC examinations conducted by the board this year.
According to PTI, the decision to defer the examinations in the district was taken after curfew was imposed in parts of West Garo Hills following incidents of violence.
Laloo said the precautionary step was taken to ensure the safety of students and examination staff, PTI reports
Meanwhile, two persons were killed in police firing during clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups over the nomination process for local council polls in the district on Tuesday, officials said, according to PTI.
Following the violence, the government imposed curfew and called in the Army to control the situation, another official told PTI.(with PTI inputs)
