NEET UG 2026: Safe score, expected cut-off and marks needed for MBBS admission to government and private colleges
Lakhs of aspirants wrote NEET UG for admission to medical colleges on May 3. With limited MBBS seats, even a small difference in marks can significantly change a student’s rank and admission chances. As per recent trend analysis, the exam continues to show intense competition.
A 'safe score' in NEET is not officially defined by NTA, but is based on past admission trends and counselling data.
The idea of a “safe score” is never fixed, however. It changes every year based on rxam difficulty level, number of test-takers, overall performance of students and seat availability in counselling rounds. If the paper is easier, cut-offs rise. If it is tougher, cut-offs may dip slightly, but competition still remains high due to sheer volume of candidates.

NEET UG cut-offs have slightly varied over the past three years, with the Unreserved/EWS range moving from 720–137 in 2023 to 686–144 in 2025 for government colleges, reflecting changing exam difficulty and competition.
Reserved categories like OBC, SC and ST have stayed within a similar qualifying band, showing relatively stable trends across years.
In NEET, thousands of students often cluster within a narrow marks band. For example, a difference of just 10–15 marks may not look large on paper, but in reality it can separate students by several thousand ranks.
As a result, a student at 620 marks and another at 635 marks may not just differ slightly in performance—they may land in completely different counselling brackets.
NEET UG scores are accepted for admission to courses such as MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, BSMS, and BVSc & AH.
