The suicide attempt of actor Saibal Bhattacharya has once again raised some serious questions about the dark side of showbiz. While the senior actor is out of danger and being treated at a Kolkata hospital earlier in May this year Tollywood was under the scanner after three young actresses died by suicide within a span of two weeks. The tragic deaths showed how depression and mental pressure can strike even a seemingly happy-go-like celeb at any time. It all started with the shocking death of 25-year-old model-actress Pallavi on May 15 this year. Her body was discovered from a rented apartment in the Garfa area of Kolkata. She was rushed to the MR Bangur Hospital but the popular actress was declared dead on arrival. Although the case seemed to be that of suicide, Pallavi’s family had raised the possibility of a murder. Two days after the incident, the Kolkata police arrested Pallavi’s live-in-partner Sagnik Chakraborty.

Pallavi’s death was mourned by model-actress Bidisha De Majumder. In a Facebook post, she said. “What is this? I cannot believe it, Pallavi Dey.” The irony is Majumder, who had expressed grief over the death of Pallavi, committed suicide 10 days later on May 25. Her body was recovered from her flat in the Dum Dum area. Several media reports suggested that a sour relationship was the cause of Bidisha’s suicide. One of her friends later claimed that the actress was depressed over her ‘dysfunctional relationship’ with her ‘boyfriend’.

On May 27, everyone was shocked to know that a close friend of Bidisha De Majumder has committed suicide in the Patuli neighbourhood of Kolkata. Identified as Manjusha Niyogi, she was working as an actress in the TV serial ‘Kanchi’ after starting her career as a model. Her mother alleged that the actress went into acute depression after learning about the death of Majumder. These shocking deaths of three models-turned-actresses put the spotlight on addressing mental health issues once again.

On May 31, the 18-year-old make-up artist, model and aspiring actress was found hanging in her Kolkata residence. This was the fourth such incident in the city this year involving a member of the showbiz industry. Saraswati’s grandmother found her hanging at their Bediadanga residence in Kasba area. She took the girl to a nearby hospital but the doctors declared her dead on arrival.

In June, a popular Odia actress Rashmirekha Ojha was found hanging at her rented home in Bhubaneswar, with her father alleging that her live-in partner, Santosh Patra, was behind his daughter’s death. However, the actress left behind a note stating that no one was responsible for her death.
