Ichchepuran exlores desire, destiny and moral dilemmas
Marking the spirit of new beginnings this Poila Boishakh, the upcoming Bengali web series Ichchepuran is set to premiere bringing with it a thought-provoking narrative that delves into the complex interplay of desire, destiny and moral choice.
Directed by Haranath Chakraborty, the series is based on a concept and story by Iman Chakraborty, who draws from the timeless human tendency to seek more—often at the cost of one’s values. Reflecting on the idea, Chakraborty noted that the story stems from observing how even simple desires can spiral into life-altering consequences, pushing individuals toward difficult choices.
At the centre of the narrative is Apurba, played by Debraj Bhattacharya—a modest insurance agent striving to provide for his family. His life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters a mysterious stone that appears to bring fortune and prosperity. However, the apparent blessing soon reveals a darker side, forcing him into a moral conflict between his principles and the harsh realities of life.
The series also stars Ishani Sengupta as Aparna, alongside Korak Samanta, Shankar Debnath and Pradip Bhattacharya, all contributing layered performances that enrich the storytelling. Aparna’s journey reflects the emotional toll of change, as she grapples with the transformation of her husband and the unraveling of her once-stable world.
The screenplay, penned by Padmanabha Dasgupta, brings depth and emotional nuance to the narrative. Dasgupta emphasized the importance of crafting flawed, vulnerable and relatable characters, each representing different responses to desire and conflict.
Director Chakraborty described Ichchepuran as the story of an ordinary man navigating extraordinary circumstances, where every decision carries weight and consequence. Lead actors Debraj Bhattacharya and Ishani Sengupta echoed this sentiment, highlighting the layered, emotionally intense journeys of their characters caught between hope, temptation and hardship.
Blending elements of drama, emotion and the supernatural, Ichchepuran promises to offer a compelling and introspective viewing experience, inviting audiences to reflect on the true cost of fulfilling one’s deepest desires.
