Only a female can be the epitome of Christ’s sensitivity: Aneek Chaudhuri on his next ‘Cactus’
After creating waves with his last short film ‘White’, Aneek Choudhuri is back again with another out-of-the-concept. His next, a silent film titled ‘Cactus’, sees a woman playing Jesus Christ! Amrita Chattopadhyay is the lucky girl to play such an interesting character. You can already imagine this one will definitely challenge many established Western traditions.
So, what convinced Aneek to cast a lady as Christ? What the talented director says in reply will blow your mind. “I think only a female can become the epitome of sensitivity related to Jesus Christ as we have read in Bible. Generally a man can’t be so sensitive. That’s one of the main reasons I cast a female actor for the character. Plus, I believe it’s a woman who is complete with both the masculine and feminine attributes and has the practicality to govern. I can associate only a female to the concept of godliness,” explained the acclaimed filmmaker.
Amrita Chattopadhyay will be playing Christ from ‘The Last Supper’. The film will not feature the 12 disciples; instead Aneek wants to show them from several pieces of glass.
The ‘White’ director also reveals he had to overcome so many difficulties while working on ‘Cactus’ as it’s sort of a dark film. “My cast and crew put in a lot of effort to get on with this project. I am so happy to see they had the faith in me despite not all members from the team sharing my thoughts. It’s a film close to my heart, completely different from ‘White’. We exploited the freedom of expression and only then concentrated our thoughts on the unique concept,” added Aneek.
The shoot of ‘Cactus’ will be wrapped up by the end of December.
