Sumana Das: From Tumpa Sona fame to festival films

Actress Sumana Das’s journey in the entertainment industry is a story of steady growth, unexpected turns, and defining moments. She began her career with the film Char Diker Golpo, marking her entry into the world of cinema. Soon after, she featured in Shesher Golpo, sharing screen space with stalwarts like Soumitra Chatterjee and Mamata Shankar—an experience that added depth and credibility to her early career.
Before 2020, Sumana also explored television, appearing in a few serials gradually building her presence on screen. However, the turning point came in 2020 with the web series Rest in Prem. While the series itself gained attention, it was the song Tumpa Sona that became a cultural phenomenon. The track’s massive popularity catapulted Sumana into the spotlight, transforming her into a widely recognized public figure almost overnight.

Riding on this newfound fame, she went on to star in Bishakto Manush, further establishing her as a versatile performer. Her career soon expanded beyond borders, with projects in Bangladesh as well as several films in India that are yet to see release. Adding to her diverse portfolio, she collaborated with veteran filmmaker Tinnu Anand on a festival-bound short film titled Broken Wall, showcasing her willingness to experiment with different formats and narratives.
Most recently, Sumana wrapped up shooting for Chheledhora, directed by Sheiladitya Moulik. "I play an important character in this film which is an Indo-American project. Working with Swastika Mukherjee in this project was a learning process. The film I heard will travel to major film festivals before its theatrical release," said Sumana. She added, "The story of the film blends family drama, dark humor, and thriller elements. The film aims for both Indian audiences and the international festival circuit. This emotional story focuses on broken parents who discover unexpected courage. I feel the story speaks to universal themes of healing and redemption which will connect with the audience."
