‘Flat No. 609’: 5 reasons why the horror thriller should be on your weekend watch list

Arindam Bhattacharya’s ‘Flat No. 609’ has already set the industry into a tizzy with an overwhelming response from the fans and critics alike. Makers have promised it will be spine-chilling horror thriller and Abir Chatterjee’s presence has also made the film even more interesting. Ahead of its release this Friday, August 31, scroll on to read five reasons why ‘Flat No. 609’ should be on your weekend watch list.

2/6

Intriguing storyline.

The horror thriller revolves around a couple Arka and Sayantani who seek a broker's help to rent a property in Kolkata. After going through a number of houses, the newly-wed couple finally decides to rent a well-furnished flat in Rajarhat. While the husband works in an IT company, his wife is on a sabbatical and excited about settling down in their new flat. But after a shocking turn of events, the couple gets acquainted with their new neighbours who have some mysterious traits. What happens next forms the crux of the film.

3/6

The creepy spine-chilling trailer

The recently released trailer looks scary enough to pull the audience towards this horror-thriller. It gives us some glimpses into an apartment and the people residing in the building. In the trailer, Tanushree’s character tries to get along with the neighbours, particularly an elderly couple, to find out the secrets and the history of her seemingly haunted flat. Mamata Shankar, as the elderly woman, also seems quite eerie as she refuses to disclose any details of what actually happened in the flat even though she claims she knows everything.

4/6

Abir leaves behind his detective avatar

Be it Byomkesh Bakshi or his recent portrayal of Professor Subarna Sen aka Sona Da, Abir Chatterjee has won many a million hearts as an on-screen detective, although Sona Da is not a conventional sleuth rather he is a history professor. But in ‘Flat No. 609’, he plays a romantic tech-savvy IT guy who finds himself in a mess while handling the situation at his newly bought flat. The supernatural occurrences bring her wife on the verge of insanity. Will he be able to solve the mystery surrounding his flat, especially as a typical confused young guy? For that, we have to wait for the film’s release.

5/6

Ensemble cast

While Abir Chatterjee and Tanushree Chakraborty play the newly-wed couple, Rudranil Ghosh plays the broker of the flat. Soumitra Chatterjee and Mamata Shankar’s portrayal of the mysterious elderly couple is vital to the narrative, especially Mamata Shankar’s character. As we have seen in the trailer, she looks mentally unstable when interacting with neighbours. Kharaj Mukherjee will also be seen in a pivotal role. The versatile actor plays an investigating officer from the detective department. The stellar cast itself promises a gripping thriller with a touch of paranormal incidents.

6/6

Different from other Bengali horror films

These days we hardly see any Bengali film which can actually scare us. Director Arindam Bhattacharya too believes it. So, he has created a scary atmosphere at a well-furnished flat which apparently looks quite normal. Arindam says in the past 20-25 years there hasn’t been any Bengali horror film which has scared the audience. We must say Birsa Dasgupta’s ‘Sob Bhuture’ was an honest attempt ant it actually managed to scare the audience in some scenes. ‘Flat No. 609’ is being promoted as a horror thriller, not just a horror flick. Arindam Bhattacharya’s 2016 debut film ‘Antarleen’ received a huge response from the audience. He received accolades for executing the script of the thriller in an attractive way.
