The 98th Academy Awards turned into an unexpected K-Pop concert after the electrifying performance of 'Golden' from the 'KPop Demon Hunters' trio EJAE, Rei Ami and Audrey Nuna.
The singers had audiences swinging their lightsticks to the beats of the hit track and grooving in their seats as they performed a short 2 minute version of the song, while incorporating Korean culture and lore. After switching up the the beat, girls transformed the Dolby theatre into what fans described as a “K-pop concert.”
Hollywood stars get groovy to 'Golden'
Videos circulating online quickly went viral, showing several Hollywood A-listers enthusiastically joining in the fun. Clips captured stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Steven Spielberg, Emma Stone, Teyana Taylor, Chloe Zhao and many others enthusiastically waving lightsticks to the beats of the song. "Gotta give it to the crowd, they’re all going up for “Golden”" a fan said, sharing a stunning clip from the stands that the cameras did not catch. Although the stars remained seated for the performance, fans on social media couldn’t get enough of watching Hollywood's biggest stars catch the K-Pop fever. “The #Oscars KPopification is REAAALLL because why did they give everyone lightsticks for the ‘Golden’ performance,” one user wrote. Another joked, “Girl they turned the Oscars into a K-pop concert,” while a third imagined veteran actor Stellan Skarsgard holding a lightstick in the audience.
'KPop Demon Hunters' score two Oscar wins
It was a night of celebrations for the team as 'KPop Demon Hunters' continued its remarkable awards-season run. The fantasy animated film won Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song at the ceremony. Its soundtrack has also been widely celebrated, with 'Golden' previously making history as the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Awards trophy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Before its Oscar victory, the makers announced a sequel coming up in the near future.
