Eric Dane, beloved for his roles as Dr Mark Sloan, and nicknamed “McSteamy” on the hit medical drama series 'Grey's Anatomy', passed away on Friday. He was 53.
News of his demise comes just a year after he announced his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Dane’s ALS diagnosis was made public in April 2025, after which, he spent his final months advocating for awareness and research.

His family confirmed his demise in a statement that read, "He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the centre of his world. Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received."

Dane’s iconic portrayal of the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr Mark Sloan won hi admirers and fans by the numbers. He first joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006 and became a fan favourite, with his character’s storyline and charm leaving a lasting impact on the series that is still running on tv.
Though his character was later killed off following a plane crash on the show, his legacy endured, contributing to the renaming of the fictional hospital to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
Sharing emotional videos from the series, fans wrote, "Rest in peace Eric Dane, and thank u for giving us one of the best love stories on tv."
Another wrote, "Thank you Eric Dane for giving me one of my favourite characters of all time."
Another penned an emotional note that read, "Eric Dane, how unfair life is when you're struck by an incurable disease. I'm so sad, I'm speechless. In 2019, Dane took on another complex role, with the grey-shaded Cal Jacobs in the Emmy-winning series 'Euphoria'. Although a stark departure from his earlier work, Dane made sure to complete his shoot for Season 3 in his final months. His final turn as the character will play out on screens beginning April 12, 2026.
